From mosaics to ceramics, a journey through beauty
Piazza Armerina and Caltagirone
Lose yourself in the vibrant colors of Roman mosaics and Sicilian ceramics whose stories survive the centuries and memories
This tour will allow us to reach the heart of Sicily, to immerse ourselves in the colors of the Roman mosaics of the Villa del Casale, a few kilometers from Piazza Armerina. Dating back to the fourth century, the villa’s mosaics represent scenes of Romans’daily life, and they are incredibly charming with their beautiful, vivid colors that remained almost unchanged over the centuries.
After lunch we will reach Caltagirone, famous worldwide for its ceramics and UNESCO world heritage site since 2002. Completely rebuilt after the great earthquake of 1693, the city has a purely baroque charm. We will travel along the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, made up of 142 steps and built by local master potters with the typical colors of the area’s ceramics: green, blue and yellow. We will continue our itinerary in the city visiting the Cathedral of San Giuliano and the many handicraft local shops.
